For those of you just tuning in, I have seven kids still at home. The oldest is 17. The youngest is 11. Yes, we’ve survived the past seven weeks with a family of 9.
Luckily, we already try to have a pretty green lifestyle. We use paperless paper towels and cloth napkins (I like these colored coded ones) to save on money as well as help the environment.
Here’s some of my most practical tips for surviving quarantine with kids:
1. Get plenty of sun.
I encourage the kids to get outdoors, even if it’s just to sit on the back porch and soak up some vitamin D.
2. Have some fun.
Laughter truly is the best medicine, so we watch comedies. I also got them this game as something the whole family can play, and we had lots of laughs.
3. Meditative activities.
I bought some coloring books and keep them where anyone can grab one. The kids enjoy coloring in them while talking or listening to music.
4. Protect some personal space.
I hide in the bedroom! Just kidding...sort of. I do take time for myself, whether it’s a 20 minute BrainTap session or soaking in a hot bath.
5. Watch what you eat.
Somewhere around mid-April, I noticed we were eating way too much sugar. I’ve been focusing on meal planning and shopping from a local farmer’s market to have as much fresh produce as possible. I find having the week’s lunches and dinners planned cuts back on a lot of stress, as well as the temptation to order out.
6. Watch uplifting content.
We’ve been watching some documentaries to feed our minds and our souls. Here are a couple (currently free) that we’ve enjoyed:
Heal Documentary: https://www.healdocumentary.com/purchase.html
The Biggest Little Farm: https://www.uphe.com/movies/the-biggest-little-farm
Other helpful resources:
MyGreenFills non-toxic essential home and laundry products. You can order online, no need to head to the stores! My family and I love the natural scent and how clean our clothes get!
We’ve also noticed that our water seems to have a lot more chlorine in it lately, so we invested in shower filters to help purify the water that we shower with.
I also created a Bingo board for the kids to help keep them busy and not spend all their time on devices. You can download a copy for your family here!
